4-H’ers Use Technology to Map Fairgrounds for Emergency Preparedness
In July, a group of 4-H youth and their families in Grant-Adams County, Washington used cutting edge global positioning technology to prepare their community for future emergencies. The youth used Global Positioning System (GPS) units to collect waypoints at the Grant County Fairgrounds, which has been designated as the statewide emergency relief zone in the event of a catastrophe. A national ESRI grant provided the GIS software and licensing that helped the fairgrounds become a technologically mapped emergency preparedness site.
“The inclusion of GIS at the club level helped prepare the youth in the Grant-Adams area for higher education and employment in the fields of science and engineering,” Diane Russo, Washington State University Extension Grant-Adams. “With valuable skills learned through the 4-H program, youth discovered new interests and professional goals.” They began the day of mapping the fairgrounds with geocaching, a high-tech treasure hunting game that is played using GPS units. For the game, youth and adults teamed up and used coordinates to find treasures, called geocaches and returned them for a prize. This was a fun way to practice using the GPS devices. Following the game, a 4-H leader demonstrated how the GIS program worked and the newly trained parents and youth collected waypoints for data entry. After the waypoints were entered into the system, the information provided was used to generate a map of the Grant County Fairgrounds.
