Walmart Foundation Healthy Living Youth Grants - Youth Voice : Youth Choice

In 2009 National 4-H Council is providing $750, 000 in grants funded by Walmart Foundation to impact the health and well-being of 7,500 young people and their communities in 15 states. These 15 Walmart Foundation Healthy Living Youth Grants, in the amount of $50,000 each to state level 4-H programs, are focused on developing and/or enhancing healthy living focused programs at the community level. Youth Voice: Youth Choice programs should focus on three healthy living priorities; nutrition, physical fitness, and safety.

Goals
  • The goals of the Walmart Foundation Healthy Living Youth Grants are to mobilize youth in 15 states to take action around three healthy living priorities—nutrition, physical fitness, and safety; and develop and begin implementing action plans. Each grantee must reach a
minimum of 500 youth and their families in rural, suburban, and urban communities for each
$50,000 grant awarded. Youth Voice: Youth Choice programs will be:

  • Facilitated though existing forums such as State 4-H Ambassadors, Statewide Teen
Conferences, 4-H Health Ambassadors, Teen Councils, and Teen Summits.

  • Used to develop or expand state evidence-based programs/educational content, support smaller community-based grants, and underwrite staff time to facilitate development.

  • Promoted through all delivery modes with a special emphasis on clubs and camps. Healthy
Living clubs and camps emphasize health related workshops, physical activity, and general wellness.

  • Action plans implemented at the local level are to be developed by youth and adults must focus on increased physical activities, promoting healthy food choices and/or safety.

  • Actions plans should mobilize youth and adult teams in local communities in 15 states to identify barriers of healthy living and develop sustained and realistic actions, create a movement where society recognizes the severe health condition of youth in America, and develop partnerships with stakeholders and champions to create sustainable programs.

Evaluation
  • Track the number of youth and adults who participated in Youth Voice: Youth Choice programs.

  • Record the number of local partnerships developed in each local community.

  • Compile action plans from each state to show young people’s input on key themes, needs, and issues surrounding healthy living.
