Brianna Attey Mouanjo receives $5,000 scholarship and will serve as 4-H’s national youth spokesperson for Civic Engagement

Chevy Chase, MD (October 4, 2021) – In celebration of National 4-H Week, National 4-H Council today announced that Brianna Attey Mouanjo, 18, of Endicott, New York, is the winner of the 2022 4-H Youth in Action Award for Civic Engagement. Attey Mouanjo will be recognized nationally for her racial reconciliation leadership, including the development of a series of anti-racism trainings conducted throughout the state. Launched in 2010, the 4-H Youth in Action Awards honor 4-H’ers who have applied the knowledge gained in 4-H to create a lasting impact in their communities.

At age 11, Attey Mouanjo, a Cornell University Extension 4-H’er, moved from her diverse hometown of Takoma Park, Maryland, to Endicott, New York, a majority-white community. “As the daughter of Cameroonian immigrants, it was a culture shock moving to a new community where there weren’t many people who looked like me. By the time I reached high school, I realized people in my school just needed a place to process their experiences with racism.” Attey Mouanjo began hosting a series of conversations during school lunch hours with students, school administration, teachers, and local law enforcement covering topics including white privilege, microaggressions, and other ways racism is experienced in her community.

Partnering with her local 4-H club and the 4-H UNITY (Urban Neighborhoods Improved Through Youth) leaders, Attey Mouanjo expanded her racial reconciliation activism to events outside school, including anti-racism book clubs, movie screenings, and adult curricula on white privilege. As a thought leader, she has shared her perspective in a variety of venues, including with Cornell extension agents, at youth development forums, facilitating Sunday school classes for older members of her church, and as a member of the New York State Government’s Youth Council.

In response to Attey Mouanjo’s leadership, her high school aims to open a “Diversity Café” to continue the work she started on campus.  A grant she received will support the establishment of the café at her high school. Her work also inspired several other 4-H clubs around the state to start their own antiracist programs and other diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

In 4-H, Attey Mouanjo has experienced belonging and freedom.  “After my mother died eight years ago, I struggled to have places to really grieve without feeling like a burden. I mostly just kept myself busy, but 4-H has given me freedom from that. My 4-H leaders have become like second moms to me and taught me how to validate myself – that I will not be a burden or failure, and that I don’t need to be afraid of what other people think of me.”

Now a freshman at George Washington University, Attey Mouanjo plans to study psychology and public health with the goal of working as an adolescent psychologist.

Attey Mouanjo will receive a $5,000 scholarship for higher education and will serve as an advocate and spokesperson for 4-H Civic Engagement programming. She is joined by other 2022 4-H Youth in Action Award Pillar Winners, Tashina Red Hawk of South Dakota (Agriculture Pillar Winner); Kristin Osika of New Jersey (Healthy Living Pillar Winner); and Dhruv Rebba of Illinois (STEM Pillar Winner).

Data reveals that teens believe broadband access is critical to leveling the playing field for pandemic recovery and economic development in their communities.

CHEVY CHASE, Md., Aug. 12, 2021 -- A new survey by National 4-H Council, the Harris Poll, and the 4-H Tech Changemakers coalition-comprised of Land O'Lakes, Microsoft, Tractor Supply, and Verizon-found that teens believe disparities in access to high-speed internet and digital skills are continuing to drive economic and social inequities in their communities nationwide.

Survey results showed that unreliable access to high-speed internet, or internet that is either sometimes or never able to provide the services needed, is highly correlated to perceptions of reduced career prospects, significantly lower levels of digital literacy, and less confidence in the ability to be successful. With high-speed internet access becoming critical in the advancement of young people and local economies, 74 percent of teens (including 79 percent from rural communities) believe that the government should play an important role in providing broadband access to all.

Despite a rising need for high-speed internet, amplified by the impacts of COVID-19, the survey showed that access to reliable high-speed internet has fallen by eight percent over the last two years. Seventy-seven percent of youth had reliable access in 2019, compared with 69 percent in 2021, with Black youth lagging 10 percent behind the general population (59 percent of Black youth reported having reliable access).

The lack of access has significant effects on the lives of young people, with the survey results demonstrating notable differences in confidence levels between teens with and without access to high-speed internet in areas like graduating from high school (92 percent vs 89 percent), having a successful career (88 percent vs 81 percent), having financial success (85 percent vs 80 percent), and life overall (85 percent vs 74 percent). Unreliable internet access also leads to significant gaps in digital skills, despite widespread agreement among teens that "digital skills will be the key to getting the best jobs for my generation" (73 percent agree).

Unreliable broadband access also contributes to temporal inequity: for example, 50 percent of teens with reliable internet access spend three or more hours on homework each day. That number jumps to 62 percent for teens with unreliable access. The same pattern holds true with regard to accessing healthcare (19 percent vs 40 percent) and submitting job/college applications (26 percent vs 48 percent).

The survey also showed that unreliable broadband access has implications for adults across the country. A majority of teens agree that "access to broadband could have helped my community economically during the pandemic" (64 percent, 70 percent rural), and "if my community had better access to high-speed internet, people here would make more money" (63 percent).

These implications impact perceptions of future social and economic mobility as well. For example, 78 percent of teens believe it's possible for them to make more money than their parents, compared with just 67 percent of teens with unreliable broadband access. Teens with unreliable access were also less likely to believe that members of their community could receive a better education (40 percent vs 58 percent), make more money (49 percent vs 56 percent), access more career opportunities (40 percent vs 55 percent), or buy a home (35 percent vs 43 percent) than their parents.

The survey polled over 1,600 respondents in suburban, urban, and rural communities between the ages of 13-19 nationwide. The full survey results can be viewed at www.4-H.org/DigitalDivide.

"The data is clear: lack of access to reliable broadband and critical digital skills are some of the greatest barriers people face today in working toward educational and economic achievement. Expanding access to broadband internet and adoption of digital skills are concrete steps we can take now to drive more equitable access to opportunity across the country," said Jennifer Sirangelo, President and CEO of National 4-H Council. "Together with our Tech Changemakers partners, we're bringing critical digital skills to communities across the country, not only to create opportunities for individuals but to build local economies as well."

"Limited internet access in my rural community leaves students and business owners feeling behind the curve. The pandemic has worsened the situation since I'm now expected to complete many everyday tasks online, such as submitting schoolwork or job applications, even though I don't have reliable access to the internet," said 17-year-old Oklahoma 4-H'er Murphy Peterson. "My sister owns a small business but can't process orders or maintain the website at home. It's difficult to build a profitable business without this important resource. It creates a ripple effect for our economy because people are less likely to stay, start new businesses, and invest back in our community. Along with internet access, a program like 4-H Tech Changemakers would give 4-H'ers a chance to help communities like mine to grow and build a better future."

These findings show the profound impact reliable high-speed internet access and digital skills can have on the lives and futures of American teens and their communities. 4-H Tech Changemakers is National 4-H Council's initiative to help build a more equitable future through digital inclusion, with a focus on Black and rural communities. Made possible by support from Land O'Lakes, Microsoft, Tractor Supply, and Verizon, the 4-H Tech Changemakers program empowers teens to increase digital skills adoption in their communities by collaborating with coalition partners, local elected officials, nonprofits, educators, and businesses. Through 4-H's Cooperative Extension network, 20 Land-Grant Universities (LGUs), of which 11 are Historically Black Land Grant Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) will prepare 4-H teen leaders to teach critical digital skills to adults in their community. Tech Changemakers will reach an estimated 50,000 adults across 18 states with digital skills trainings in 2021.

Headquartered in New York City and with a presence around the world, Verizon generated revenues of $128.3 billion in 2020. With support from Verizon, Microsoft, Land O'Lakes, Inc. and Tractor Supply Company, 4-H will empower teens to help close the opportunity gap caused by the growing digital divide

CHEVY CHASE, MD (May 17, 2021) - National 4-H Council is announcing a vast expansion of its 4-H Tech Changemakers program supported by Verizon, Microsoft, Land O'Lakes, Inc. and Tractor Supply Company. Established in 2017 with support from Microsoft, 4-H Tech Changemakers trains and equips teens to teach adults digital employability skills that include online job seeking, social media marketing, software use, and more. The $8.5M investment from the coalition of partners, which includes $7.5M from Verizon, will allow 4-H teens to bring vital digital skills to more than 50,000 adults across 164 communities, with a focus on rural communities and communities of color.

Inequitable access to the internet and digital skills are contributing to a growing opportunity gap in areas like education, employment, healthcare, social fulfillment, and entrepreneurship. The FCC estimates that more than 21 million people don't have access to high-speed broadband internet, with other recent reports indicating the issue may be significantly more wide-spread. This lack of access has a substantial negative economic impact on affected communities-which are disproportionately rural and those of color-including decreased job readiness and fewer opportunities for employment. One recent study estimates that if the digital racial gap is not addressed, 76 percent of Blacks and 62 percent of Hispanics could "get shut out or be under-prepared for 86 percent of jobs in the US by 2045."

The 4-H Tech Changemakers program seeks to close this opportunity gap by making digital skills accessible to those who need them most. "This program empowers young people to identify which skills are most needed and by whom in their community, and then to go out and teach them," explained Jennifer Sirangelo, President and CEO of National 4-H Council. "In this model, teens leverage their digital skills to give back to their communities while building critical leadership and organizational skills."

4-H, as the positive youth development (PYD) organization of the nation's Cooperative Extension system, has the unique ability to reach young people in every state, territory, county, and parish across the country. The 4-H Tech Changemakers program will be implemented by 23 Land-Grant Universities (LGUs), of which 11 are Historically Black Land Grant Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This localized approach-which puts university faculty and trusted Cooperative Extension professionals at the center of implementation-will ensure maximum impact in the communities that need it most.

"At Verizon, we see digital inclusion as a necessary building block for creating greater societal equity." said Rose Stuckey Kirk, chief corporate social responsibility officer for Verizon. "This is why Verizon has invested in 4-H Tech Changemakers. This program is innovative in the way it equips 4-H'ers-who are both digital natives and trusted voices in their communities-to not just teach digital skills but build the vision for what a more inclusive future looks like."

Through 4-H Tech Changemakers, teens become credentialed through formal training in how to teach digital skills to adults. They also receive technology to support their projects, assistance from 4-H professionals and coalition partners, and training in ways to effectively engage their communities. To date, this powerful, youth-centered program has reached more than 10,000 adults with digital skills training in collaboration with Microsoft, the program's founding partner.

"Broadband access is critical to helping young people and adults develop digital skills for today's jobs," said Vice President and Lead of Microsoft Philanthropies, Kate Behncken. "We helped launch 4-H Tech Changemakers to align connectivity with digital skills training and are thrilled to see other companies recognize the importance of encouraging students to be digital advocates in their communities."

Rural Americans are 10 times more likely to lack high speed internet access than their suburban or urban counterparts. Research indicates that roughly 60 percent of farmers in the U.S. lack sufficient connectivity to run their business, while 25 percent of farms have no internet access whatsoever. That means that many farmers, ranchers, and agricultural workers are being left behind.

"Land O'Lakes is pleased to support the 4-H Tech Changemakers program, to equip individuals to leverage the tools necessary to compete and thrive in today's economy, bolstered by adequate broadband access," said Tina May, vice president of Rural Services at Land O'Lakes, Inc. "Through this collaboration and our work on the American Connection Project, we see the potential for real change and more prosperous individuals, families and communities."

Tractor Supply Company, a long-time supporter of 4-H, has expanded their partnership to include 4-H Tech Changemakers.

"With nearly 2,000 Tractor Supply Stores around the country, our business is all about supporting rural Americans. We recognize the importance of connectivity and digital skills and believe that the inclusive, multi-generational connection of the program will provide community benefits that extend beyond digital skills. We are excited to support the 4-H Tech Changemakers program," said Hal Lawton, President and CEO at Tractor Supply Company.

In 2021, the program will engage youth through Cooperative Extension at the following LGUs: Alcorn State, University of Arizona, University of Arkansas, Auburn University, Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, University of Georgia, Kentucky State, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, North Carolina A&T, Prairie View A&M, Purdue University, Southern University and A&M College, Texas A&M, Tennessee State, Tuskegee University, Virginia State, Virginia Tech, Washington State, West Virginia University, West Virginia State, and University of Wisconsin.

Leaders support 4-H’s goal of empowering 10 million young people with opportunities to succeed in life and career

CHEVY CHASE, MD (December 15, 2020) – National 4-H Council has announced the election of two new leaders to its Board of TrusteesDr. Jon Boren, Associate Dean and Director of New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service, and Abby Durheim, 4-H Young Alumni Advisory Committee member and a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Boren and Durheim will support Council’s mission to increase investment and participation in the nation’s largest youth development organization. They will be key partners in the Board’s work to support the 4 H system’s ambitious goal of reaching 10 million young people by 2025, with a special focus on promoting youth voice and supporting 4-H’s ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

As co-chair of the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) 4-H Leadership Committee, Dr. Boren is uniquely positioned to represent the Extension System on National 4-H Council’s Board. Among the priorities will be to address the challenges facing our young people, including the need to provide them with practical, research-based programs offered through 4-H to improve their quality of life.

As one of 11 alumni leaders on National 4-H Council’s Young Alumni Advisory Committee (YAAC), Durheim will share youth voice with the National 4-H Council Board in her role as the YAAC representative. “We are grateful to Jon and Abby for their commitment to 4-H and for joining Council’s Board at this critically important time,” said National 4-H Council President and CEO Jennifer Sirangelo. “Their unique perspectives and expertise will be a valuable addition as we increase support for Cooperative Extension’s 4-H program and strive to eliminate the opportunity gap that affects 55 million kids across America,” added Sirangelo.

Sirangelo also thanked and praised outgoing Trustee Dr. Edwin Jones, Director, Virginia Cooperative Extension, for his service to National 4-H Council’s Board. “Ed’s contribution to our Board has been extraordinary. As a national leader in Cooperative Extension and youth development, Ed’s inspiring vision for the future of 4-H has shaped our work—and benefited millions of young people,” said Sirangelo.

Over 8 years, the Walmart Foundation has invested more than $20M to help 4-H youth prepare for success in life and career.

CHEVY CHASE, MD (November 30, 2020) – The Walmart Foundation awarded a $3 million grant to National 4-H Council to help reach more than 269,000 youth, families, 4-H professionals and volunteers across the country with essential nutrition education through the 4-H Healthy Habits program.  The program focuses on rural and underserved communities to leverage youth – and their voices – as catalysts to build healthier lifestyles with education and activities in nutrition, wellness, cooking skills, physical activity and budgeting.

Since 2012, funding from the Walmart Foundation has helped 4-H equip more than 1.25 million young people with the skills to make healthy food choices. This year, as communities across the country continue to navigate the impacts of COVID-19, the 4-H Healthy Habits program is evolving to help bridge the opportunity gap and ensure all youth have access to the resources they need to continue learning important health and nutrition skills when in-person learning is not possible. Through the CLOVER digital platform, diverse youth and families will have access to engaging activities and resources to increase knowledge of nutrition and improve eating behaviors.

“In 4-H, we believe in the power of young people and the key role they can play in creating a more promising and equitable future,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, President and CEO, National 4-H Council. “Thanks to continued support from the Walmart Foundation, we can help ensure that even more young people have equal access to opportunities to not only know how to eat right, but also have the confidence and skills to face life’s challenges.”

4-H Healthy Habits uses a multi-pronged approach to strategically leverage resources of the Cooperative Extension system to address food access, nutrition and health equity for underserved youth and families. Healthy Habits utilizes university-backed, evidence-based, impactful programs, local partnerships and national influencer engagements designed to reach diverse audiences, sustainability plans that impact underserved youth and their families and professional development opportunities for 4-H professionals, with the end goal to improve health equity across the country.

“Building healthy eating behaviors early on is key to building healthy communities,” said Eileen Hyde, Director of Food Systems and Food Access for Walmart.org.

“The Healthy Habits program does an excellent job of empowering youth in underserved populations, and we’re proud to support this work.

Leveraging the proven influence of young people, the 4‑H Healthy Habits program inspires teens to educate younger youth and empower their parents and families to make healthy food choices. In 2020-2021, the program will engage youth through the land-grant universities and Cooperative Extension System in 28 states and two territories including: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands

Digital Platform to Grow and Meet Educational Needs of Youth and Families

CHEVY CHASE, MD (November 16, 2020) - USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) announced last week an investment of more than $10.5 million to support educators at technical schools, community and junior colleges, and youth development programs, including Cooperative Extension's 4-H program. USDA-NIFA will invest in eight regional and national projects, including a $3 million grant to National 4-H Council to support the continued development of CLOVER, Cooperative Extension's positive youth development digital platform on 4-H.org.

CLOVER is designed to meet the growing needs for virtual and non-virtual educational resources that can be easily used by families at home or rapidly adopted by educators and Extension professionals. It is intended to level the playing field and address the widening opportunity gap for youth and families as a result of the pandemic. The platform currently features over 500 engaging, hands-on learning experiences powered by Extension's research-based, 4-H positive youth development programs.

"Since the onset of COVID-19, 4-H educators have been dedicated to ensuring kids, families and communities have the support they need - from educational resources, caring adult mentors and perhaps most of all, a sense of community," said Jennifer Sirangelo, president & CEO, National 4-H Council. "Thanks to this significant grant from USDA-NIFA, our Cooperative Extension network can expand its reach through CLOVER by providing effective learning experiences to meet the needs of young people and families across the country."

Through this award, USDA-NIFA recognized institutions deploying innovative techniques and technologies to continue offering high-quality skill development during these unprecedented times and will invest in eight regional or national projects to support their efforts. Details regarding all award recipients and initiatives can be found here.

This work is supported by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, Education and Workforce Development Program, grant no. 2021-67037-33376/ Project Accession No. 1024940, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

American Connection Project organizations launch an interactive tool for users to locate more than 2,300 free Wi-Fi locations in 49 states

ARDEN HILLS, MINN. (October 20, 2020) - Several partner organizations today announced the launch of the American Connection Project (ACP) interactive Wi-Fi map. The map provides a free resource to help the public locate more than 2,000 free Wi-Fi locations in 49 U.S. states, with more than half at local 4-H Cooperative Extension offices. The map includes Wi-Fi locations from Land O'Lakes, Inc. and its ag retail owner network, along with several partner organizations including 4-H, CentraCare, Compeer, Kentucky Farm Bureau, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, Polaris, Inc., the Public Library Association, Tractor Supply Company and Watch Communications, and support from Microsoft and Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company.

Today, 18 million Americans don't have access to high-speed internet - most of them in rural communities. Further, roughly nine million K-12 students and 400,000 public school teachers living in both rural and urban communities lack reliable internet access required for learning. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted health care usage causing telemedicine visits to reach an all-time high as patients seek to avoid exposure at health care facilities.

The Wi-Fi map is an extension of efforts undertaken by the American Connection Project to drive meaningful progress toward closing the digital divide to create opportunities and reduce digital inequality for rural and urban communities in the United States. The map is designed to provide immediate but temporary access for those Americans who lack access to the internet today.

"The launch of the American Connection Project map marks an important milestone in our effort to bring critical services to disconnected communities across America - and a resource for individuals to find broadband access when they truly need it," said Tina May, Vice President of Rural Services at Land O'Lakes, Inc. "We are enormously grateful for the ongoing commitment of our partners in banding together to advocate on behalf of rural communities throughout a difficult time across our country."

"More than 18 million Americans do not have access to broadband Internet, making the digital divide one of the greatest barriers to education access and workforce development for America's youth" said Jennifer Sirangelo president and CEO, National 4-H Council. "Broadband access was already a great challenge for students before the pandemic, so now that so many young people are matriculating from home, it's imperative that they have high speed internet connections they can depend on. And as the youth development program for Cooperative Extension serving the needs of young people across the country, we are pleased to be a part of this coalition and its mission to make broadband accessible for communities that need it most."

"All Americans, but particularly rural Americans, will benefit when greater access to affordable broadband internet services is created. This has been a priority issue for Kentucky Farm Bureau for several years now," said Mark Haney, President of Kentucky Farm Bureau. "Partnering with Land O'Lakes and the coalition of organizations that makes up the American Connection Project aligns very closely to our efforts, and we are proud to offer free outdoor Wi-Fi signals at our nearly 200 locations statewide as part of this noble initiative."

"Since the beginning of the pandemic, we've worked with our partners to keep people connected by bringing free public Wi-Fi hotspots to communities around the country--vital links to the internet during a difficult time" said Shelley McKinley, vice president of Technology and Corporate Responsibility at Microsoft. "This map is an excellent summation of that work, and we are grateful for the partnership of so many organizations who are working to bridge the broadband gap."

"We're honored to be a part of the ACP's efforts to find ways to improve rural connectivity. Providing free Wi-Fi from nearly 580 Tractor Supply stores and counting is one of the near-term solutions we can provide to help connect school children, small business owners, farmers, and those who need internet access to a vital resource in today's digital world," said Glenn Allison, Tractor Supply's Vice President, IT Enterprise Architecture and IT Solutions.

Throughout the next several months, additional locations will be added to the map. The American Connection Project searchable Wi-Fi map can be accessed at https://www.americanconnection.io/.

The American Connection Project fosters long-term digital inclusion in support of vibrant and thriving rural communities.
